What is the difference between phase-angle control and zero-cross (burst) firing? Jul 24

 

  • Phase-angle control: The SCR is turned on at a variable delay after each zero-crossing of the AC sine wave. It provides very fine, continuous voltage regulation. It is mandatory for inductive loads (transformer-coupled loads) and useful for loads whose resistance changes with temperature (e.g., silicon carbide, tungsten).
  • Zero-cross (burst) firing: The SCRs are only switched on and off at the zero-voltage crossing of the mains. The controller varies the number of full AC cycles applied to the load. This method generates the lowest harmonic distortion and is the preferred choice for conventional resistive heating elements (nickel-chromium, constant-resistance loads).
